4 Different Types of Arthritis
Almost 70 percent of the aged people in North America are affected by different kinds of arthritis. This dangerous disease mainly occurs in women, who often suffer from serious loss of calcium and vitamin D from their body, as they age.
Here Are 4 Different Types of Arthritis
Gout
Gout is a type of arthritis which is also known as podagra, if a big toe is accompanied by the other symptoms. Gout normally occurs when the level of uric acid in the blood increases, and ultimately it gets deposited in the joints, tissues, and tendons.
A patient suffering from gout has to suffer from repeated attacks of inflammatory arthritis, which is accompanied by red, swollen, and tender toe. This disease was historically termed as the “rich man’s disease” because, previously only rich men were able to eat foods, like meat and alcohol.
The lifestyle and diet of a person is one of the primary reasons behind the occurrence of gout, and hence, this disease can be prevented by checking the diet and by modifying the lifestyle of a person. Other than this, gout can be medically treated with the help of medications like, steroids, NSAIDs, prophylaxis, and colchicines.
Osteoarthritis
The word “osteoarthritis” is derived from the Latin words “osteo” meaning “of the bone”, “arthro” meaning “joint” and “itis” meaning “inflammation”. Osteoarthritis is characterized by gradual degradation of the joints. This disease mainly occurs, when the lubricating membrane and the cartilage protecting the joints starts wearing away.
As a result, the surfaces of the bones get exposed and collide against each other. This leads to tremendous amount of pain and inflammation. The symptoms of this disease include, locking, tenderness and stiffness of the joints, accompanied by joint pain.
Osteoarthritis can be treated with the help of steroids and analgesics. Apart from this, various natural remedies and treatments, like mud pack therapy and acupuncture can give effective results for treating osteoarthritis.
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is most commonly known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the most common forms of arthritis in children, which normally occurs before the age of 16. The symptoms of this disease include loss of appetite in children, limping, reduced physical activities, swelling of the joints, persistent flue like symptoms, and lethargic attitude.
The main cause behind this disease is autoimmune disorder, which means that the immune system of the body starts attacking itself, which leads to the destruction of the cells and tissues of the joints.
The reason behind this abnormal behavior is not certain, but the genetic system and internal environment of the body is suspected to be vital reason behind such behavior of the immunity system.
There are three main types of juvenile arthritis; namely, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Medications for treating juvenile arthritis include NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and TNF alpha blockers. Apart from this surgery and swimming are also good for curing this disease.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is also one of the most common forms of arthritis. This disease can also affect children, and leads to severe inflammation and pain of the joints. It is a chronic inflammatory disorder, which affects the joints, particularly the synovial joint.
This arthritis is most common in aged people and the condition worsens with age. Various strong medications like DMARDS can be used to substantially slow down the damaging process and other than this, regular physical activities can improve the condition. Surgery of the inflamed synovial joint can also give relief from this disease.
