5 Ailments That Affect Young Men
January 2, 2009
Young men can be really stubborn. Even if they know something is wrong with their body, they avoid going to the doctor because it just doesn’t seem manly.
Here are some common diseases that affect young men. If you have one of them, go see your doctor.
Ringworm
Gross as it sounds, it is caused by a fungus, the same culprit as in athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. It strikes the scalp, body, feet or nails. In the scalp, it starts as a small pimple, and then grows into a bald patch. It is caused by direct contact with infected towels, hats, or any other personal items.
Damp gym floors and infected bathroom stalls are perfect breeding grounds. If you find you have it, see the doctor because, if left untreated, it can result in an annoying ugly infection that won’t leave you before long.
Ulcers
You probably knew that the stomach uses very concentrated acids to break down food. You may have experienced those acids in the form of ulcers. These acids can break through your stomach lining because of bacteria, which shrivels the lining and causes tissue damage. You can tell you have ulcers if you have intermittent pain under the sternum after a meal or when you are hungry or at night. They are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and bloody stool.
Men having blood type O, those who take alcohol, drugs and tobacco are all at high risk. See your doctor, he will know how best to treat it.
Kidney stones
If you are not taking enough fluids, you are likely to develop one. They are stones in the kidney and cause a lot of pain when they come out along with urine. People who take excess vitamin D, thyroid hormones can form calcium stones, which are very common. High protein diets and chemotherapy form uric stones and the rarest are the hereditary cystine stones.
Men between 20 and 40 are at major risk. You will have pain in your back or on your side below your rib cage. Bloody or cloudy urine is also a sign. See a doctor who will locate them with a CT scan or ultrasound and treat you accordingly.
Chlamydia
Here comes the most common sexual disease. It is caused by bacteria and does not always show symptoms. You may find urinating painful or you may discharge a gooey liquid like pus. However, chances are that you may not even notice it.
Sexually active men who do not have safe sex are the primary victims. You might be prescribed with antibiotics and you should inform your partners so that they too can take the necessary precautions.
Irregular heartbeat
Though more common in older men, even young men can fall victims to it. Most of these problems are generally congenital. However, even an overactive thyroid, high stress or fear can cause them. High blood pressure and diabetes are major risk factors.
Your doctor will order an electrocardiogram, which will record your heartbeat and measure the extent of your condition. The rest depends on your doctor. Mostly medication does the job; however, in some cases you might need a pacemaker.
Take care
Therefore, take care of your body and if you experience any unusual symptoms then do not be afraid to go to the doctor.
