60′s Bouffant Hairstyle For Women
The bouffant was a very popular hairstyle in the mid 1700’s in Europe, especially France. It is supposed to trace its origins back to just before the French revolution, and was supposed to have been created for Marie Antoinette. Coming to the 20th century, the bouffant was a huge rage in the 1960s. It was a very visible hairstyle.
Everyone from the social elite, aristocracy, working women to the young college going women was a slave to this fashion trend. Teamed with flowery print bell-bottom trousers and tight tops, it was considered the height of fashion. The name of this hairstyle can be quite a tongue twister. The easiest way to remember how to pronounce it is- “Boo-faant”.
The Modern Take Of The Trend
The bouffant has now made a comeback. A lot of fashion shows in 2011 had models sporting various versions of this hairdo. It is now being adapted for various lengths of hair and also for different lifestyles. This is so that even a student, who does not get much time to spend on dressing up, is able to keep up with this reemerging trend. Let us see a few different ways to make this hairstyle at home.
The Half Bouffant For Long Hair

This is a style for long hair and is a more casual look. In this version, the hair is styled up only partially. Circle out a section of your hair right at the top of your head and divide into 5-6 sections. With a comb, start back combing each section, in downward movements. Start at the tip of the section and stop just short of the scalp. Do this for all the sections that you have made.
With a wide paddle brush, gently comb the top of this back combed hair to make it smooth and neat. Take care not to press it down. Hold the section behind like a ponytail and push it up to the height that you need. It should be like a puff on top of your head. Then pin it at the back with few bobby pins.
You can pull up one section from each side of the open part of your hair and pin this back as well. Brush out the open hair neatly and apply a little hair serum to make it shiny. You’re ready to go out and party!

This is ideal for medium length hair. Ideally, your hair should not be freshly washed, as that makes the hair silky and slippery. You need the hair to have a little natural oil to help stay in place.
Brush your hair very well, to make it smooth and completely detangled. Take a small section from right in front and clip it. This will help keep it out of the way. Circle of a section of your hair on top and backcomb it (similar to the previous method).
Smooth down the bouffant, making it neat and pin it at the back of your head. You can wear a hair band very carefully right where the puff starts and leaving the bit of hair that you had clipped off. Sweep it gently off your face and tuck it behind your ear. What an easy way to look pretty in just 5 minutes!
