A Fairytale Wedding – The Medieval Wedding Gown
February 23, 2009
What could be more romantic than marrying your prince in a medieval wedding gown? Add a royal wedding theme and you’ve got a charming, unique wedding. A medieval wedding would be quite easy to do in the winter with rich velvets and brocades to set the scene. A summer wedding would require a lighter touch in the fabrics and color scheme. With a little creativity, you can wed your shiny knight no matter what the season. Here are some ideas for a medieval wedding gown.
Think Colors
Medieval brides did not wear white. As a matter of fact, blue was originally the color of purity. If you choose to wear colors, go for a rich burgundy or green for a fall or winter wedding. A summer bride looks lovely in blue or pale yellow. Or choose metallic fabrics of silver, gold or bronze for a sumptuous, dramatic look.
Fabulous Fabrics
The choices for winter fabrics are so beautiful: velvets, brocades, heavy satin or silks. For summer, the choices are equally stunning: lighter silks, chiffon, lace, linen, and organza. For spring or fall weddings you might add cut velvet, buttery leathers and light woolen accents. If you love a particular fabric, but it’s out of season for your wedding, use it as a trim, or to line your sleeves and cloak. Whatever the fabric, a lot of detail and heavy trimming will add to the royal appeal.
Traditional Styles
Medieval dresses traditionally have full skirts with a lace up back, a deep bodice and long, wide sleeves. You can make the sleeves very wide so that the “points” almost touch the floor and line them with another fabric. A dropped waist and princess cut is enormously romantic.
The “Juliet” dress, with its high waist, and sleeves pouffed at the shoulder, is a very flattering dress for every figure, and is beautiful in almost any fabric.
Another typical dress may have an under-dress and tunic, which gives you an opportunity to combine colors and fabrics. This is lovely in light fabrics with a high waist.
The wonderful thing about a medieval gown is that you can create it totally. If your wedding is an expression of the love you share, your dress is an expression of what you bring to that love. And this dress brings creativity, romance, and a unique charm.
