Abdominoplasty
December 19, 2008
Abdominoplasty or tummy tucks as it is better known as, has become practically indispensable for those who wish to lose fat in and around the stomach. It is a surgical procedure where the excess fat is removed from the abdomen and the abdomen muscles are tightened.
Generally, both men and women who have deposits of excess fat and loose skin in their abdomen opt for abdominoplasty. They find it difficult to lose the excess fat through pills, exercise and dieting and surgery is thus their last hope. Many models, wannabe cine stars and especially new mothers are increasingly opting for this procedure. But it is not without its drawbacks.
For starters, women who are planning to become pregnant should not go for abdominoplasty, as the muscles in the abdomen would expand during pregnancy. Also people who have had any type of abdominal surgery should not opt for abdominoplasty. Although abdominoplasty enhances a person’s appearance and boosts self-confidence, it also leaves a permanent scar on their tummy and the recovery time is pretty long too.
Like any other surgery, abdominoplasty too can incur certain risks. Post surgery complications like blood clots are very rare, but there are chances of infections. Before opting for the surgery, you need to consult a surgeon who will assess your health and take into account the amount of fat in the abdominal area and the skin type. You also have to provide your surgeon with other medical history, if you have any, along with general information of smoking, drinking or any other medication.
It is absolutely necessary for smokers to stop smoking before and after the surgery, as this will delay the healing process. Moreover it is important to follow the surgeon’s recommendation on food, exercise, medication and alternative treatment thoroughly. You may feel that you require an abdominoplasty but your surgeon after studying your fat deposits may recommend a partial abdominoplasty and not a complete one. The surgeon may even suggest other forms of fat reduction processes like liposuction, depending upon the fat content, body structure and other reasons. The surgeon recommends the best solution and it is best to follow the surgeon’s advice in such cases.
