Bathing Your Newborn Baby: Some Helpful Tips For First Time Parents
Bathing your baby is a task that needs to be done carefully as improper handling and bathing technique can hurt your little one.
It is also a new activity for the baby therefore you have to ensure that your baby is comfortable. If the correct procedure is followed you will surely enjoy bathing your baby as it is a very fulfilling experience in itself.
Keeping your baby clean is very important; however you do not need to bath your infant more than two to three times a week. Choose any convenient time during the day, preferably before feeding your baby otherwise your little one may throw up in the bathing process.
During the time when the belly button is not completely held due to the cutting of the umbilical cord opt for sponge bath to clean up your baby. Gently wipe off the baby’s face with a wash cloth dipped in plain water. You can use soap water to cleanse the entire body. After this finish off by rinsing in plain water and pat dry.
After the belly button heals you can go for the tub bath. But never leave your baby alone in this tub even for some seconds as it may lead to dangerous consequences. Use a plastic tub that suits the size of your baby. Keep two to three clean wash clothes handy to cleanse your baby. Use a gentle soap and shampoo which are specially formulated for babies.
Always bathe the baby in a mild warm room temperature and use lukewarm water. Too much hot water can cause burns. Check the temperature of the water with the back of your hands several times before placing the baby in the tub. Fill the tub with very little water; just 2-3 inches are enough for your little one.
Lower your baby into the tub with one hand supporting the baby’s neck and head and the other supporting the lower part of the baby’s body. Wash the face and body gently with soapy water. Then wash the hair with the shampoo and be careful not to let the foam reach the baby’s eyes.
Wet the wash cloth in water and use it to rinse your baby. Immediately dry your baby with a clean towel and wrap him/her up completely covering the head to avoid catching cold.
