Beauty Tips: Essentials For An At-home Manicure

By on October 7, 2010

It is so expensive to make the trip to the salon for your manicure. It does not take long for the money to add up when you visit every 10 days, especially when the price is more than $15 at the good salons.

You do not need to break the bank to have beautiful nails. Take some time to get the tools you need and you will have long, strong, lovely nails.

Your Tool Box
Every manicurist has tools that help her do her job well. Purchase your own set so you can do it right. You will need a nail file to give your nails a smooth look, cotton balls to remove nail polish, vitamin E (cream or oil) to soften your cuticles, a nail buffer to smooth your rough spots, q-tips to correct any nail polish messes, a cuticle trimmer to trim the cuticles, some clear polish, and (maybe) some white nail polish for the Perfect French Manicure.

First Step
It is important to begin your manicure with clean hands. Wash them with soap and water, then remove your nail polish with non-acetone nail polish remover. Afterwards, soak your hands in warm water to prepare them for the next step. Now, dry your hands and you are ready for the next step.

Shape
Using your nail file, shape your nails into the shape and length that works best for you and your lifestyle. To create a smooth shape, use your nail buffer and smooth the surface of your nail. Apply vitamin E to each nail and rub it in well. Then, if your cuticles need trimming, push them down and clip away the extra skin. Towel dry.

Color
Your choice of color can be determined by the occasion, your personality, and the season. Wear what you like best. Apply at least one coat of the color to ensure even application, let dry between coats. Then let the last coat dry before you do anything else.  For a French manicure, apply white nail polish on only the tips of your nails. Wait until the polish dries, then apply a clear coat of polish over top of the whole nail and allow it to dry thoroughly.
