Becoming A Makeup Professional

Becoming a professional in the makeup industry can be an interesting, creative and well-paying job.

Professionals get to travel all over the world and meet new and interesting people. If you have decided to become a makeup professional, there are a number of steps you need to follow in order to become successful in your chosen field.

Get information

The very first step is to do some basic research, for example by finding a school that offers courses to help individuals become makeup artists.  Try to gather together as much information as possible about the schools and choose the best one.  There are also many courses and programs for makeup artists available online.  Try to learn as much as possible.  There are certain basic skills a professional must have before applying makeup to clients.

Things to know

Not all types of makeup are suitable for all types of skin and color.  It is important to assess the client’s face, skin type, color and facial shape. Choose the best makeup base available to prepare the face and then complete the look by applying makeup, lipstick, eye shadow, blush and mascara.

A very important part of the job is to know how to do both photographic makeup and live makeup.  Learning to do makeup for film, television and theatre purposes is also important.  A makeup artist should be familiar with all the tools and equipment used within their profession.

In this profession, good communication skills are vital.  It helps maintain a strong relationship between the client and service provider.

Get the career started

Create a portfolio that employers find impressive.  Get more experience doing volunteer work.  Gather a list of all beauty salons, spas and cosmetic companies in the area that employ makeup artists.  Look in newspapers and online postings for available jobs.  Try to find out what employers require to make the best impression possible during the interview.

You need to be up to date with the latest trends in makeup and enjoy what you do.  Build up your reputation with professionalism and you will find many clients who are in need of your services.
