Benefits Of Antioxidants
July 25, 2009
Our bodies are constantly being attacked by oxygen free radicals, known as oxidants. This cannot be avoided because not only are these particles found in our environment they are also produced by cells during metabolism.
One of the main reasons our cells age is because of reactions produced by these free radicals. However, we can still counter a lot of the damage done and ensure that our cells live longer.
Oxidation
Oxidants are extremely reactive because they have an unpaired electron. Our cells sometimes undergo oxidation, which is like the corrosion process in metals. There are many ways in which we can prevent cellular oxidation, or inflammation.
Antioxidants
An antioxidant forms a bond with the oxidant, which results in a stable compound. This compound can then be removed with other wastes in the body.
Although many minerals and vitamins, and enzymes are good at bonding with oxidants, the most effective antioxidants are Vitamins A, C, E, and Selenium. However, most of these are not produced by the body, and therefore have to be ingested.
Among the complications caused by oxidants is atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. According to the American Heart Association, this is a result of the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. One of the best natural defenses against this is Vitamin E.
On the other hand, Vitamin C, probably the most powerful antioxidant, is great for strengthening the immune system. Various studies have shown that microwaving one’s food greatly reduces the amount of antioxidants in it. According to Dr Christina Garcia-Viguera, in order to retain as much nutrients as possible, vegetables should be cooked in very little water.
What to do?
In order to lead a healthy and longer life, we should ensure that there are adequate amounts of antioxidants in our diets. The recommended amount is about two to four servings of fruit and about three to five servings of vegetables each day.
Those that find it difficult to consume the recommend amount of antioxidants each day should consider taking a supplement. One can choose from gel tablets to digestible tablets, while liquid tablets can be used as well.
