Car Seats For Infants
May 11, 2009
There are various options available to parents who want to safely transport a child in a car. Infant car seats, convertible car seats, and booster seats are several of the available options for carrying a child in a car.
Infant Seats
Infant seats allow the infants to sit in a semi-upright position, with the child facing the rear. These seats are ideal for newborn babies up until they reach 20 to 35 pounds.
Precaution
Parents need to be careful when they have a child in an infant seat. They are best suited for children under twenty pounds, or reach one year of age and should be in the rear facing position. These seats can be adjusted as the child grows older. It is very important that parents keep in mind the height and weight limits prescribed by the manufacturer.
Convertible Car Seats
The convertible car seat allows infants to sit in a semi-upright position, facing the rear. In these seats, shoulder harnesses are adjustable with slots. This allows the car seat to be at or slightly below the infant’s shoulder level.
Precaution
Parents with an infant riding in a convertible car seat should make sure that a 1 inch space is left from the top of the head to the top of the seat. If the child is older than a year and weighs between 30 to 35 pounds, the infant can be seated upright in a forward-facing position. These seats are designed to carry infants weighing no more than 40 pounds.
Parents should check that the child’s shoulders are not above the upper harness slots or that the rear tops are not above the seat tops. If they are, it is unsafe for a child to sit in a forward-facing convertible seat.
A child weighing up to 65 pounds can sit in a forward-facing convertible car seat with a five point harness (also called a high-backed/convertible booster). The convertible booster’s are used with the vehicle’s seatbelts to help a child better fit in the vehicle.
Booster Seats
Booster seats with a belt positioning system are ideal for infants weighing between 40 and 100 pounds. Boosters with a high-back seat keep the back of the vehicle seat at the top of the child’s ears.
