Caring For A New Born In Winter
Winter is a time when all of us regardless of age bundle up. Grown up’s may choose to have a hot cup of coffee to keep themselves warm. In winter, it is important to keep babies warm.
A baby does not have the capacity to regulate his/her own body temperature. A baby loses heat very rapidly from the extremities- the hands and legs and from the head.
It is important to cover and protect a child and keep him/her warm and snug in winter to prevent hypothermia. Some signs that indicate a child is feeling cold are his/her hands and feet getting chill and his/her skin flushing and getting red.
It is important to dress a baby in layers to protect the child from the cold. A warm sweater or jacket, the thickness of which may be based on the extent of chillness will protect the child’s chest and prevent him/her from contracting a cold.
It is a good idea to put on a pair of socks or booties for the child to prevent the feet from getting cold. Mittens do the job well for the baby’s hands. A warm woolen cap is a sure fire way to prevent loss of heat through the head. The ears need to be covered sufficiently to prevent ear infections. Where the child refuses to wear a hat, another thin sweater or a scarf around the neck will help trap the heat of the body.
The child’s bath water needs to be warm. The temperature can be checked by putting in your elbow to see if the heat feels comfortable enough. Ensure that the wet diapers are changed periodically every 3 hours to prevent the child from feeling wet and cold. Ensure that his/her sheets are not wet or soiled as this may lead to discomfort.
Avoid synthetic clothes in winter, they do not trap heat and make the child feel cold. Fleece, wool, and flannel are good fabric choices. Set the heater in your house to a comfortable temperature and use humidifiers to keep the air from going dry.
