Christmas Decorating on a budget

January 28, 2010

For most families, Christmas is their favorite time of the year for special decorating projects. Do not allow a small budget to ruin it for you this year. You have many options available to you. Follow these steps to achieve your goal of decorating by still staying within your budget.

Step one
Go through any decorations you may have stashed from last year. If you are a young couple just starting out, speak with parents or other relatives to see if they may be able to donate some items to you. Some of the items may need to be updated, so get creative and consider what can be done to these items that will show your style and taste.

Step two
Decide which rooms in your house are most important to you for decorating. Consider which rooms your guests are most likely to see and be sure those rooms are on your list. Your next mission will be to decide how much you are willing to spend on the decorating part of your celebration. Using your total budget and considering the rooms you want to decorate, make a list of all the items you wish to purchase. When you venture out to shop, follow your list. By following a list you are more likely to avoid impulsive shopping.

Step three
Be careful when and where you decide to shop. Watch for specials and sales, look for rebate offers and do not forget about the internet stores full of great Christmas decorations. Not so many years ago you could only find sales on holiday decorations after the holidays were over. More recently, the stores are working hard to make sales. When you decide it is time to actually begin shopping, start at your local dollar and discount stores. These stores are filled to the brim with every kind of Christmas decoration you can imagine.

Step four
Once you have collected all of your decorations, both purchased and donated; divide the items up for each room you wish to decorate. Some of the donated items may be able to be dressed up to make them look more updated. Do not let your budget issues cause you problems this year. Use your creative side and start carefully placing your decorations where you want them. Before you know it, you will have a festive home that you will be proud to show off to the visitors in your home over the holidays.
