Common Cold Remedies For Children
A continuous build-up of mucus in the respiratory system of a child causes: A blocked or runny nose, persistent common cold or /and cough, or a severe sinus pain. This may lead to inflammation of bronchial tubes and thus bronchitis, which is caused by the same virus that causes common cold and cough.
The mucus is built up through the inflammation of the inner lining of the bronchial tubes. In an attempt to get rid of this mucus the child coughs harder. Apart from difficulty in breathing and a feeling of fatigue, the child may get a fever too. The treatment lies in serving the child with antibiotics or following natural home remedies.
It’s comfortable to a great extent for the sufferer to cough it out or to get it flushed out of the throat due to the built up of mucus. For treating chronic cold, cough and congestion it is essential to boost the supply of fluids in the diet. The augmented supply of liquids contributes to thinning the mucus present in the system thus making your child better.
Feed your child with a minimum of 4 glasses of 8 oz capacity of liquids. Of course there is nothing better than water, but for a change of taste you may swap water with a fresh fruit juice or coconut water, being rich in minerals it provides much needed energy.
Feed your child with ample of hot soups. Chicken soup, especially soothes the chest and is helpful in eliminating the mucus as well.
Honey as you know has antibacterial qualities. It aids fighting the infection and thus removes the mucus from the system. Onion juice mixed with a spoon of honey may be administered three to four times a day to get relief.
Look to the possibility of increasing the humidity in the surrounding area. This facilitates breathing especially at night when the child is asleep. You may support up your child’s head with a pillow at night. Or else you can raise the level of the bed by keeping a few bricks under the head-side of the bed. This raised level will be helpful for comfortable breathing of the child.
