Common Hair Myths
June 9, 2009
Brushing hair is good: Many people believe that a hundred strokes of the hair before going to bed keeps it strong and healthy. But in reality, excessive combing leads to breaking and splitting of the hair.
Full moons and haircuts: It is believed that if you cut your hair on the day of a full moon it will grow back faster, healthier and stronger. There is no evidence to support this.
Dandruff spreads: Dandruff already exists present on each individual’s scalp and it increases or decreases based on various environmental and health factors. It is not contagious and does not come from using another person’s comb or towel. It is however a hygienic practice to avoid using other people’s personal belongings.
Baldness is inherited from the mother: Men can begin to go bald as early as their twenty’s and women can begin to go bald around age forty five. Hair loss could be genetically inherited from either side of the family and is not exclusive to the mother’s genes.
Gray hair multiply if plucked: It is a widespread myth that two hairs grow back in the place of one if you pull them out. Needless to say, this statement is baseless.
Wearing hats causes baldness: This is another popular myth. Though wearing hats can cause your hair to break or snap, it in no way affects hair loss. You should avoid wearing really tight hats that can cut off blood circulation.
Repairing split ends: Split ends cannot be repaired. The only way to get rid of them is to cut off the split ends. It is important that one do so before the splits lengthen and damage more hair.
Hair grows faster if cut: The most popular myth of all is that hair grows faster after it has been cut. Though regular trimming helps reduce split ends and keeps hair looking good, it does not promote hair growth.
Overnight gray hair: Gray hair supposedly appears out of nowhere one fine morning. In reality it takes a long period for gray hair to appear. Hair turns gray due to the loss of pigmentation and this does not happen overnight.
