Corns and Calluses
Hyperkeratosis is a medical term for the skin getting hard and thick. You know this better as a corn or a callus. They show up in areas of the body that are irritated often with friction or pressure. This is the body’s way of protecting itself.
If you do a lot of work with your hands, calluses can develop to protect the heel of your hand. Because your feet take the most abuse of any part of the body, they are most likely to develop a callus. It is also possible to get them on your elbows and even your fingertips. It all depends on your lifestyle.
Corns are a little different in their symptoms. These actually appear on your toes and can be painful after some time. They are in the form of a circle and have a hard center. You can purchase a treatment such as medicated pads at your local pharmacy in order to get rid of them. If worse comes to worse, you can always visit your doctor and let them perform a procedure to remove it.
Both of these issues will cause your skin to become discolored and, if left untreated, they can break open and leave you open for infection. You do, however, have options to treat calluses and corns once you have them. Your shoes should be loose fitting and not tight and snug on your feet.
If the problem is a corn, do not use plasters. These will do more harm than good to the healthy skin. It is also important not to cut either one of these. You can also rub sweet oil on the area, put lamb’s wool between your toes and avoid wearing pumps.
One way to help keep your skin soft and relax at the same time is to soak your feet in some diluted chamomile tea. After a nice long soak, use a moisturizing cream that contains 20% urea to soften the skin. You should do this daily. Do a little research and you will be able to find some other ideas to help get rid of corns and calluses.
