Disorders Of Pregnancy And How To Solve It
Pregnancy is considered to be one of the best phases of a woman’s life. The beautiful journey that takes over 10 months is filled with plenty of surprises and expectations for the new mother. However, it does not come without its own share of issues and disorders that can affect the health of the mother and the fetus inside her in more ways than one.
So if you are pregnant with your first child (if this is not your first pregnancy, you would probably be used to the issues mentioned below), here are some common health related pregnancy disorders that you need to know about and handle.
Common Disorders Of Pregnancy
Gestational Diabetes
A common disorder among many pregnant women, gestational diabetes occurs when an expecting mother has abnormal levels of sugar in her body. Although this is not considered harmless and the sugar levels usually become normal post delivery, in certain cases, the sugar levels remain elevated even after delivery. This is when the woman in question starts experiencing symptoms similar to high blood sugar.

Gestational diabetes can be easily treated but would need the guidance of a qualified medical practitioner for the same. Check with your doctor about the various treatment options available to combat the issue. And make sure to have your blood sugar levels checked once in 5-6 months to check for recurrences.
High Blood Pressure
Another very common pregnancy disorder, high blood pressure can be caused due to a variety of reasons, including mood swings caused by elevated hormone levels. High blood pressure can lead to the buildup of excess pressure in the arteries, thereby causing extreme discomfort for the mother. In some cases, high blood pressure during pregnancy can possibly lead to a far more serious condition called pre-eclampsia that can affect the blood vessels, kidneys, livers etc.
With pregnancy, your choices of medications for treating conditions like high blood pressure are very limited. Better check with a doctor before opting for any kind of medication or herbal supplement to treat the issue.
Excessive Weight Gain
Although this cannot be considered a disorder at all, many women feel otherwise. And that is why weight gain is also often considered as a pregnancy disorder. A woman needs to put on about 12 kilos of weight during her pregnancy.

However, how you come to gain those 12 kilos is what determines whether your weight gain is healthy or not. If you gain extra pounds by gorging on fatty foods and other unhealthy choices, chances are you might be compromising on the health factor. It would also make it more difficult for you to get rid of this weight post pregnancy. So try to gain weight in a healthier manner and stay fit throughout your pregnancy.
Itchiness
This usually develops in areas under the breasts, thighs and abdomen. As the pregnancy progresses, a woman’s skin would start expanding to accommodate the developing baby inside her.
When this happens, the skin tends to lose its elasticity and becomes dry. This would in turn cause the skin in these regions to become itchy and scaly. Itchiness can also be caused by elevated hormone levels in the body.

Swelling
A very common pregnancy disorder in women is swelling that happens on the face, hands, and feet etc. This disorder surfaces when the body retains excess fluids to cope up with the pregnancy and the needs of the fetus inside the womb. This condition is aggravated if the mother does not drink enough fluid to keep herself hydrated. Too much of water retention would cause the hands, feet and face to swell up instantly, giving off a bloated look.
Flu And Fever
The elevated hormone levels experienced during pregnancy can potentially weaken the body’s immune system. This would make the body more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. And one of the most common issues arising out of these infections is flu. Although this can be treated easily, it is considered wise to consult a doctor if the symptoms (including cough, sneeze) are aggravated.

Fever is another common pregnancy disorder that is hardly anything to worry about as it usually occurs during the first trimester and just disappears on its own. However, in cases where the fever is abnormally high or is accompanied by other symptoms including dizziness, nausea or vomiting, the woman in question may suffer a miscarriage or something worse, and so would need to be rushed to a doctor immediately.
