Folic Acid For Men’s Fertility
February 2, 2009
Infertility has become a common issue and therefore the human reproductive health remains to be a focus of medical science. One study involving 800 male done by a Sydney assisted reproduction unit found a “staggering” 59 percent had nutritional deficiencies; this also includes lower than normal levels of folate or vitamin D.
A message from a fertility specialist is that just like women, men should also prefer a diet rich in folic acid, as well as other vitamins at the time when they go for a baby. As per Anne Clark, Fertility First medical director, a similar rate for the would-be fathers were noted with high levels of damaged sperm, advanced paternal age, or the habit of smoking.
One researcher said that 123 volunteers showed willingness for lifestyle changes and proper dietary supplements two to three months before the start of fertility treatment. Of course, almost three-quarter achieved a good reduction in the number of damaged sperm; and 36 succeeded to reach pregnancy including 18 with no use of assisted reproduction technologies.
There were no miscarriages out of these 36 pregnancies with a fact that almost a third of pregnant women were aged 38 or older.
Clark also says that damaged sperm is responsible not only for the reduced rate of chances of pregnancy, but also for the miscarriages as well as for the genetic diseases existed in the baby.
For a healthy life, one must consider reproductive system as one of the aspects to be taken care of. According to a report by the Courier Mail, thinking of pregnancy is a couple’s project; and therefore the fertility is a couple’s issue and not just woman’s concern.
If the women are asked to eat the traditional typical foods for improvement during the pregnancy with outcome of a healthy baby, the men should also be asked to follow the same pattern. This is because they are fifty percent responsible for making of a baby.
So, now, it should be clear that the pregnancy is not just the issue of women; it equally involves the men. Because, just with the truth that the only women has to undergo the physical process of pregnancy, men cannot escape the responsibilities from their sides.
