Tired of the same old hair? Why not add some color to it? And by color, I mean doing some nice highlights. That is one of the coolest ways of changing your looks. That way you would not have to change your hair style, just adding some color to the locks. You can either go to a salon or do it yourself at home.

Before you opt for hair highlights, there are a few things you would have to keep in mind.

First of all, you need to know what color would suit you better. Ask your stylist for opinion. After choosing the color, you have to make sure that it looks good with your hair style. Remember, even though highlights are used to make you look good, but a lot depends on your hairstyle. And last but not the least is your age. Choose the color according to your age. Do not go for anything that is not appropriate for your age. That will ruin your look instead of making you look good.

Remember, highlighting is completely different from hair coloring. In case of hair coloring, one colors all the hair, but highlighting is coloring parts of your hair. They stand out from the rest of the hair and are visible.

There are different ways of highlighting hair. The methods are foiling, painting, chinking and low lighting.

In case of foiling, foils are used to keep the colored hair separate from the rest of the hair. That way, the selected portion of hair is colored and the rest of the hair is color free.

Painting is different from foiling. In this case, either a brush or a comb is used to apply color to the hair.

Chunking is the method of coloring chunks of hair of different size.

Low lighting is the method by which light shades of color are applied to the hair.

After highlighting hair, you need to take special care of your hair. Here are some tips that will come on handy. Use special shampoo that is made for highlighted hair.

Make sure you do not shampoo on the very day you have highlighted your hair.

If you are highlighting your hair yourself, then make sure you check the expiry date of the color and follow the instructions carefully.
