Hair Straightening
June 9, 2009
Hair straightening is a style adopted to make the curly hair straight using chemicals. However, this alters the hair structure, breaking the hair bonds that keep the hair curly. But still hair straightening is preferred, as it helps the woman give a style statement.
But consulting a hair stylist before straightening the hair is essential, as only a hair stylist can tell whether the hair of a person is suitable for straightening. Hair straightening may result in hair developing tight curls. If hair still does not straighten, despite strong chemical use, it results in permanent hair damage.
Hair Straightening Process
Wash hair properly and apply a conditioner to protect the hair from harmful affects of hair straightening chemicals and heat. A variety of processes are used to straighten the hair. In any process, only a small section of hair is straightened at a time using chemicals and heat, repeating the process for whole hair.
Tips for Hair Straightening
Chemically straightening the hair permanently, as well as on a day-to-day basis does have positive/negative effects. Hair straightening requires long hours of sitting with a hair stylist, so it’s necessary for a woman to keep time separate for this.
Types of Hair Straightening
Chemical Straightening
Chemical Hair Straightening should be done only by a trained professional hair stylist, who has experience in the technique. A professional does a strand test firstly to see how strong the chemical can be used. Also individual hairs’ are examined to determine the elasticity, hair texture, and hair health. Its’ not advisable to do relaxing and coloring; and a gap of 2/3 months is necessary. This method is also called the “Japanese thermal straightening method”.
Thermal Hair Conditioning
Thermal Hair Conditioning is expensive but a permanent method that lasts for 1 year, after which the re-grown hair can be treated. Blow dryers are used after shampooing to add more body to the hair. Steadily becoming popular, only an experienced hair stylist should do it. This method taking between 4 to 8 hours, is inapplicable on curly hair and also hair which has undergone chemical treatments.
Hair Straightening Irons
Hair straightening irons are used to straighten the hair. The hair is straightened by applying heat directly. The wide plated irons can hold large sections of hair. A comb can also be used to hold the hair. Expensive ceramic based irons can also be used, as they cause less damage. After-care is very important for straightened hair to control further hair damage. Avoid repeatedly touching the relaxed hair. Regularly use mild shampoos’ and extra-rich conditioners as well as deep conditioner 1 or 2 times a week if necessary.
Hair Serums
Hair serums give shine and extra protection to the hair. Apply hot oil once a week, and then use a wide toothed comb to manage them. Repeated hair straightening should also be avoided. As the hair recovers, apply hair conditioners and hot oil.
