Handling Illness In Newborns
When small children fall sick, it is but natural for parents to panic and get stressed out. Here are some basic pointers to handle some basic ailments that can strike newborns.
Fever
Fever is often seen when the body and the immune system is at work. It is only a symptom and the cause underlining it needs to be examined. A low-grade fever up to 101.4 is not something to panic about. A recommended dose of fever reducer and pain reliever may be administered.
If the temperature shoots over this, then the doctor needs to be consulted. Look out for signs of fatigue and lethargy. If it is pronounced along with dehydration and a sunken forehead, it is a cause for concern and needs to be examined by a doctor.
It is normal for a child to feel uncomfortable and have a loss of appetite around this time. It is essential to increase the fluid intake, especially water. If the fever is accompanied by vomiting and loose stools, it is a cause for concern requiring medical intervention and timely treatment. Keep the child dressed in loose fitting comfortable clothes to allow air circulation.
Cold and Cough
Cold and cough are very common even in young children. This can be contracted due to a change in the weather, being around a person with cold or allergies. Stuffy noses occur because of inhalation of strong smells, pollutants, and allergens in the air. If this leads to congestions and wheezing, then it needs to be treated by a doctor.
A simple saline solution can be administered as nose drops for blocked noses. This prevents the mucus from drying up and makes it easier for the baby to breathe. An elevated sleeping position could also help in such cases. Rush him/her to a doctor in the case of wheezing.
A clear description of the symptoms will make it easy for the doctor to treat the child. Do not panic and try to give some first aid measure to the baby at home to make him/her feel comfortable before rushing to the doctor for further treatment.
