Hangover—How To Overcome It
April 9, 2009
“Had just one drink too much last night.” That is the most common remark from anybody who exceeded his or her normal intake of alcohol the last evening. And the physical state that prompts him or her to utter that phrase is called as a hangover. The cause in a majority of the cases is excessive consumption of alcohol or taking it too hurriedly.
Depending on a number of factors, every individual has a safe limit for the volume of alcohol that may be consumed in a given time. Crossing that limit causes this unpleasant physical state known as hangover. Regular drinkers are aware of this safe limit; yet, at times they exceed the limit and face the consequences the next day.
If you consume more than the normal intake of alcohol to which your system is accustomed, your body reacts to that and the casualty is your sleep cycle. It is then disturbed and causes you to be in that state. Most of the drinks need to be accompanied with large volumes of water, which, if avoided, causes dehydration of your body. Here are the consequences of that extra drink you had last evening.
Due to lack of sleep or disturbed sleep, the next morning your mouth is very dry and you may not like the taste of plain water. Again, as a consequence of insufficient sleep you may continue to feel drowsy and have red and swollen eyes accompanied with a splitting headache. In certain cases, it may cause nausea, vomiting or give you an upset stomach.
The psychological effects include a depressed mood due to sense of guilt and inability to concentrate on your work the next day. In certain cases, it causes very short memory lapses or uncalled-for quivering of your hands or fingers.
Of course, one should be cautious not to exceed the limit while having alcohol; yet in case of a hangover, here are a few home remedies to help you to get back to normal.
Take a lot of fluids in the form of juices, buttermilk or water with lemon. This helps to hydrate your body. A large consumption of fluids is needed to wash out the excess alcohol left over in your body. Taking a spoonful of honey dissolved in water will also provide relief, as honey contains fructose that reacts to neutralize the alcohol in your body.
Headache as a consequence of hangover can be controlled by application of cold water on your forehead.
