July 23, 2009
Obesity comes with a lot of health related problems. The excess fat stored in the body makes it susceptible to many health related conditions. The problems could be either physical or psychological.
Physical problems
Here are some physical problems related to obesity. When you are obese you turn to have eating problems. It is a kind of vicious cycle. Eating disorders lead to obesity which in turn causes eating disorders. When you are obese, you want to eat more because your body gets used to a lot of food getting into it.
There is also the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. This is because the excess calories in the body put a lot of stress on the body to produce more insulin to make use of it. However, the insulin produced by the body will not be enough, or the body develops a resistance to insulin.
Obesity also increases the risks of developing cardiovascular diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and other blood vessel problems.
There is also the risk of getting cancers like colon cancer and kidney cancer. These are just a few of the many serious physical problems that can result from being obese.
Psychological problems
Here are three psychological problems that can result from obesity.
The obese person may develop a low self-esteem as he/she gets to know that society does not like obesity. In some cultures obese people are given names related to their conditions, some people will have the adjective big added to their name e.g. “Big John”.
There is also a poor body image. Your dress size will change and your waistline increases. Obesity means losing your normal shape. This also affects your general level of activity because the excess weight will slow you down. You will realize that you are no longer as fast as you used to be.
Prevention
The physical and other psychological effects may cumulate into depression.
You can avoid obesity by choosing a healthy lifestyle. This means a good diet and exercise. Avoid fatty foods and high calorie foods. Check your BMI regularly to see where you stand.
If you are already obese, consult a doctor to find out what you can do to fix of the problem.
