When a person tells you that they are having their hair highlighted, they are saying that they are going to have streaks of colors placed in their hair. Highlights are usually blond and are mainly gotten by people with darker hair. The best way to have highlights added to your hair is to go to a salon and have them professionally done.
The cheapest way to get your hair highlighted is to follow the directions you find in a do it yourself kit. Doing it yourself will save you a lot of money, but having it done might save your hair.
Pick Your Highlights
Before you do anything else you have to decide what kind of highlights you want. Are you going for a style that looks funky and edgy, or are you interested in doing something that will brighten your face? The style of highlights you choose will tell the whole world a great deal about your personality. However if you work in a corporate office you might want to think twice about getting your black hair streaked with purple highlights
When you are having highlights adding to your hair, you should make sure that the color of the highlights compliments your skin tone.
Before You Get Started
If you opt for the do it yourself highlighting kit you really need to double and triple check the expiration date that should be printed on the box. If the date has passed you should throw the kit away and get a new one. You never know how stable the chemicals are once they have aged past their expected shelf life.
When you are highlighting your hair, you need to remember that you only need to do the top layer of your hair. Leave the bottom layer alone.
The best tools for highlighting your own hair won’t come in your do it yourself highlighting kit. The brushes that work the best for streaking and highlighting is going to require that you make a quick trip to your local art supply store to pick up some flat ½ and ¼ inch acrylic brushes.
Make sure that you are wearing rubber gloves when you start coloring your hair
Don’t wash your hair for two days after you highlight your hair.
