Holiday Packing
April 29, 2009
It’s time to pack that vacation you’ve planned, but you’re slightly overwhelmed as you try to think of everything you need to take with you. Going on holiday usually falls within one of three categories, relaxing, active or business.
Sometimes trips include two of these activities or even all three types. Below is a little advice to help with any packing dilemma you might encounter.
There are three categories of items to consider when packing. Those items you cannot travel without, referred to as the essentials list, always come first. The next items are those that are very useful, but not completely necessary. The final group includes those items that are optional, items you might find practical on your adventure.
The essentials begin with money. Credit cards, travelers’ checks and a bit of cash are required for any good trip. The next items you must be sure to pack are your travel documents. Your passport and itinerary should be kept in an easy to reach place.
Your outfits and clothing will depend on your intended destination. No matter where you go, you will need shoes, socks and underwear. Don’t forget any prescription medications you’ll need during your trip, along with your toiletries, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and feminine products. Sunscreen is another necessary item, no matter where you go. A washcloth or face towel is also handy.
Those very useful, but not completely essential items include things like your driver’s license, guide books and pocket dictionaries. You might want to make copies of your essential documents, but keep them separate from the originals. Take along water and snacks for any long waits you might encounter.
Consider including some basic medical supplies such as water purification tablets, antibacterial cream, small bandages, and antifungal cream and pain relievers in your pack. Purchase your supplies in smaller travel sizes or use small refillable bottles.
Finally, pack practical items you might find useful. You can take along a diary to record all of your experiences and a dual time watch to keep track of both the local time and the time back at home. You should also take along a few entertainment items, such as a laptop or MP3 player, or comfort items for the trip such as an inflatable neck pillow.
Just think it through. Take what you’re sure you’ll need, but don’t over pack. An enormous suitcase can put a damper on the best of holidays.
