What are Chapped lips?
Chronic or severe chapped lips are conditions wherein the lips become very dry and also cracked. This occurs when the moisture content decreases. It is quite difficult to keep the lips smooth as well as chap-free because the skin covering the lips is in fact mucous membrane.
What causes chapped lips?
Chapped lips are commonly caused by allergies to cosmetics, exposure to wind and sun, lip biting or deficiency of Vitamin B.
What symptoms do chapped lips exhibit?
Chronic or severe chapped lips are rough, dry, red, sensitive and tender; the lips are also peeling and cracking.
Precautions to prevent chapped lips
1. Apply lipstick/lip balm before you go out in cold and dry weather.
2. Lips must be kept soft without licking.
3. Make sure that the air inside your home is humid.
4. In sunny weather, use sunscreen when you go outside.
5. Do not expose to sunlight too much.
6. Consume a lot of vegetables and fruits.
7. Prevent dehydration by drinking a good quantity of water.
8. Make sure that your diet includes vitamins B and C.
9. Foment with hot water and apply a Vaseline and honey mixture on the lips three days in a week.
10. Use a soft, wet toothbrush and gently brush your lips.
11. Use lip balm when you participate in outside activity.
Homemade Remedies for Curing Severe Chapped Lips
The following home remedies can help in curing severe chapped lips:
Glycerin and Milk Cream
1. Mix glycerin (2 drops) and milk cream (one teaspoon) and apply to the lips; keep it on all night.
2. Mix ground rose petals with milk cream and apply on the lips for curing severe chapped lips.
Mentholatum – apply as much Mentholatum as possible on your lips before going to bed; the dryness will disappear the next morning.
Petroleum jelly – apply on your lips three to five times a day; this is thin and looks shiny on top of lipstick.
Unsalted Butter – melt unsalted butter and apply it twice a week to prevent getting chapped lips. In winter, apply Vaseline at night.
Olive Oil – apply a small quantity of olive oil on the lips.
