March 16, 2009
What are corns and calluses?
Corns or calluses are overgrown skin tissues; it is a condition in which thickening and hardening of the skin takes place. This normally occurs on the soles of the feet, but might also occur on knees/hands. These are normally in the shape of a cone and develop in the space between toes.
If the corns form between toes, they are soft due to moisture between the toes; on the other hand, corns above the toes are hard. These growths result in pain/inflammation.
What symptoms do corns exhibit?
Normally, corns occur at the toe joints and on the foot soles. The symptoms exhibited by corns are:
• Hardened growth on the skin of the toe.
• Pain when you apply pressure on the corn.
• White as well as rubbery bumps in the skin.
• Swelling/redness around the corn, causing severe discomfort.
Corns occur due to your wearing incorrect footwear that exerts pressure on the feet and toes. The main reasons for formation of corns are:
• Stitch/seam in the shoe rubbing on the toe.
• Shoes too tight.
• High-heeled shoes or footwear.
• Incorrect-fitting shoes.
Home remedies for corns

• Tie a freshly-sliced lemon at night on the area of the corn and remove only in the morning.
• An irritant for the corn is raw papaya juice and hence useful for treating corns. Apply ½ teaspoon three times a day to treat corn.
