Homemade Soap Making Tips
Homemade soaps are chemical free soaps, as no artificial chemical is used in their preparation. Very simple ingredients are required to make a homemade soap. These are:
• A wooden spoon
• A wide-mouth glass half-gallon jar
• Some flat containers with plastic wraps
• Enamel
• A dairy thermometer
Rules to be followed while making soap
1. The containers should be ready to use. Grease them well.
2. Only enamels, stainless steel or iron containers should be used. To mix the lye solution a wide mouth glass jar will be used. Enamel or iron container will be needed to cook the soap.
3. Always cover the curing soap with a folded blanket as allowing it to sit in drafty area will harden the finished product.
4. The thickness of the molds should be at least one and a half to two inches. A thin mold will make the soap curl whereas the soap will be too big and difficult hold if the mold is too thick.
5. Scented oil should be added right before pouring the soap into the molds. It’s good to use a fruity scent or flower scent. Adding almond or olive oil is good for dry skin while lavender oil acts as an astringent.
6. Adding lye to the cold water requires a lot of attention as it is to be done very carefully and slowly. It’s better not to do it in the presence of children or pets. Do not forget to wear your rubber gloves and never breathe in the fumes. Use cold water as the mixture heats up when lye is added in the water. The mixture must be slowly and carefully stirred to avoid splatters and burns.
7. Stir the solution until the lye crystals get completely dissolved. To bring the lye solution back to the temperature of 90-95 degrees, place the jar in pan containing cold water. Add lye solution to oil, once the solution reaches that temperature.
8. Vinegar is a neutralizer of lye. In case the solution splashes on your skin, immediately rinse it off with water initially and then with vinegar.
