How Do You Handle Alzheimer’s disease
We all grow old and feeble. Unfortunately, some of us get up there in age a little more easily than others. It is expected that we forget certain things as we age from time to time but, when it progressively gets worse then you may have what is known as Alzheimer’s disease.
It is tragic that this disease affects millions of people from every walk of life each year. This disease does not discriminate against race, culture, color or gender. The affects of this actually cripples that parts of the brain that control your memory. Not to mention your thoughts and the way you speak.
When a patient is diagnosis with AD or Alzheimer’s disease, it starts out slowly with the occasional memory loss and eventually gets to the point where they cannot remember anybody in their family or anything from their past. At some point, even remembering how to or just to brush their teeth can become a chore.
Trying to care for someone who is inflicted with this crippling disease can be very trying. Patients need constant care once they hit a certain stage of the disease and the pressure can sometimes be very overwhelming for people.
Along with the stress of trying to take care of the patient, there is also the financial burden and strain that it causes. It can cost upwards of $12,000 per year to care for someone who has AD. Many elderly people end up in the care of a home in order to bring some sort of relief to the family member who has been providing the care.
There are some medications that are on the market to help prolong the symptoms but not a cure as of yet. You do have many resources at your disposal to get some help.
Remember, do a lot of research and soul searching when taking on the responsibility of a family member with AD. If you feel that it is too much for you and your family, you may want to make alternative arrangements for the person who is ill.
