How To Administer Medicine To A Child
No child wants to take medicine. The pills may be too big and hard to swallow or the syrup may taste bad. But medicines are necessary for remedying a cold or illness. Regardless of the taste, we have to take our medicine.
But giving medicine to a child becomes a task in itself. Often the child either runs away, cries or refuses to open his/her mouth. As a parent, you need to give your child their medication to make them feel better. So how to do go about administering medication to a child? Following are some tips for making the medicine go down easier.
Be honest with your child. Don’t tell them that the medicine tastes like grapes when it really tastes awful. This will only build a feeling of distrust in the child. And when the time comes to take the medicine again, they will definitely revolt.
Make sure you give the child the proper dosage of medication as many times a day as it is recommended. Before giving it to the child, check with your doctor and pharmacist for any drug interactions or allergic reactions.
If your child is an infant, mix the medication in with some formula, juice or a fun, soft food such as applesauce or ice cream. If your child has to take tablets, grind them into a mixture with pudding or something else the child enjoys eating.
Syrup medicine can be administered by using a spoon, medical measuring cup or a medicine dropper.
Take your time when giving your child medicine and soothe them during the process. Do not grab them or yell at them. Explain to your child why they are taking the medication.
They may be interested in hearing how it works to make them feel better. If your child takes the medication without putting up a fight, reward him/her with hugs and praises.
