How To Apply Lipstick

By on July 4, 2011

Lipstick has been the favorite of women since about 5000 years! It is the easiest way to bring a focus to your face. You should apply the lipstick with correct tools and get the correct setting to go with the occasions. Choose the correct lipstick shade matching your skin tone. Lipstick can subjugate the skin tone when you have a light complexion; lighter shades for pale and dull light complexions.

Every woman who wants to be beautiful needs to be conscious of the lipstick color and shade for her face which considers her face’s shape, lip curves, skin complexion and the clothes she will put on besides age and hair color. Carelessness in any of the mentioned areas can cause your looks to be compromised. Wearing just the correct lipstick can boost your morale anytime anywhere, especially when the occasion is important.

How to Apply Lipstick

A lipstick is a very useful tool for beautifying a person’s face when used correctly; however, it can cause a person to look unpleasant if applied wrongly.

Firstly, clean your lips before applying the lipstick. Use cotton wool swabs dipped in some cleansing milk. Dirty or smudgy lips do not bring out the luster from the lipstick. However, do not apply soap on your lips as they are soft. Instead, use foundation cream; let it dry before applying lipstick.

Next, draw around your lips with an outline before filling them with the lipstick with a brush. You can pat some powder on your lips to prevent the lipstick from spreading. Make yourself comfortable when applying lipstick by sitting at the dressing table instead of standing which may cause your hands to be unsteady. Use the dressing table to rest and steady your elbows and hands when applying the lipstick.

Put the lipstick on your upper lip first before applying on your lower lip. Apply a lighter shade before a darker shade; use a tissue paper to soak up the excess color. Use a brush to blend in the light and dark shades. Put a bit of cream to add luster if desired.

Remember to ensure that your lips are always soft and supple before you apply any lipstick to them. If necessary, use foundation on a holey sponge to dust lightly on your lips for a longer last of your lipstick.

Reshaping Your Lips

You do not need to regret not having the ‘perfect’ lips as lipsticks are very useful in reshaping your lips’ shape and size. Broad lips can be ‘thinner’ and thin lips can be ‘broader’ with lipstick applied well. Small faces can have lighter shades on the lower lip with darker shades on the upper lip for the right enhancement and emphasis. If your lips are thin, put lighter shades on the upper lips with dark shades on the lower lips for a fuller look. Broad lips can be ‘slimmed’ by reducing the lips outline; thin lips can be ‘broaden’ with an increased outline.

Reshape uneven lips with the right outline to fit your face; you may need to apply at least 2 coats for the right thickness. Have it removed when you rest at night so that your lips can breathe and stay healthy.

A small mouth may require an outer outline drawn with a dark shade but filled with a light shade. A broad mouth requires a light shade; a lower protruding lip requires a dark shade in the middle with a light outline.

Remember not to re-touch stale lipstick as it does not give the shine or evenness; hence, it makes the wearer look uncomfortable.

The Right Color

Although everyone has their favorite colors, these colors may not be suitable as you age. Hence, it is advisable to select the colors that are appropriate to your age to bring out the best in you, as per your clothes and occasion. Young girls take natural shades excellently as these colors exude their youthfulness while working ladies should opt for slightly darker shades for work.

Fair ladies aged between 18 and 25 look great in shades of pink while dark complexion ladies look good in shades of orange. Older women of 25 and 40 will benefit from lighter shades. While choosing the right lipstick color, consider also the eye colors.

Women with brown eyes look good in pink color lipsticks while black eyes will sparkle with light crimson shades. Those with blue eyes glow with scarlet or subdued brown shades while grey eyes will stand out with any orange shade.

Hair color also matters with the lipstick color. Black hair ladies will look great with shades of orange while pink or brown scarlet colors look great on gray hair. Your dress color also impacts your choice of lipstick; a sari looks outstanding with orange lipsticks, while pink matches pink clothing to the ‘T’. You might not be able to match every dress with a different lipstick but you would have sufficient range of colors to play with.

The Right Technique

When you are to apply your lipstick, make sure that your elbow is firmly rested on the surface for a steady application. Practice drawing your outline with the lip pencil without dragging the skin around your lips. Emphasize your cupid’s bow at your upper lip with a clean finish of the upper lip edges. Use a good lip brush to fill your lips within the outline drawn while making sure that every part of your lips is evenly filled. Open your mouth slightly to make sure that the lip corners are covered well.

Lasting Lipstick

Some easy tips to make your lipstick last longer include blotting your lips surface with a piece of tissue paper giving you a semi-matte finish and reapplying lipstick to your lips.

Always have your lipstick bag with the right lipstick shade, brush, balm, gloss and liner to put on a refresher when necessary. Many ladies tend to smear lipstick color over their teeth; shape your mouth in an ‘O’ before applying will avoid that problem.

Caring For Your Lips

Lip liners are not only used to define your lips; it can help prevent your lipstick color from bleeding or spreading. You can also use a soft tooth brush to remove dead cells to exfoliate them from your mouth region; this will help you redefine your lip lines and shape.

You will agree that applying lipstick is indeed a fine art.
