How To Become Self-Confident
June 9, 2009
Self-confidence can be a hard thing to develop for some individuals. It’s easy to believe that someone with an upright bearing and commanding voice is self-confident.
Self-confidence makes others see you as more charismatic and attractive. There are ways to build up your confidence if you feel you lack that certain swagger.
Convincing yourself that you’re capable, strong and trustworthy is the first step toward developing self-confidence. This might seem difficult, but finding out what others think of you can help in this endeavor, especially if you ask others who are close to you.
Accept the compliments you get, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Take other people’s opinions under consideration, but don’t base your self-image on them. If you’re confident in yourself, it’ll become apparent to others.
Building self-confidence is a journey, not a set goal, and it is advised that you consider your past achievements. Write down all the things you’re proud of having accomplished in the past. It can be anything from cleaning the house to giving a sage piece of advice to a friend. This will help illustrate how capable you really are and give you a bit of insight as to what you can accomplish in the future.
After you’ve examined the past, break out a new sheet of paper. It’s time to examine the present with a little Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat (SWOT) analysis. Your education, sense of humor, or maybe just a talent for origami can be listed among your strengths. Don’t be shy; write down what you’re good at.
No one else ever has to see it, so be honest. Do the same for your weaknesses. Any hang-ups about yourself should be listed as weaknesses. Think about all the opportunities you might have to improve the way you look at yourself and at the world around you. The obstacles you see in the road ahead are threats. Write down the problems you think you might encounter on your journey toward self-confidence.
Considering your past achievements and completing a SWOT analysis can help you start forming a roadmap for the future. You’ve explored the past. You’ve taken a look at yourself in the present. Keep those things in mind as you now look toward the future. Now is the time to think about what you want from yourself and what your goals are. Take another sheet of paper and write down your goals, listing steps you can take toward making them a reality.
This clear vision can keep you on the right track toward boosting your self-confidence. Don’t be afraid to take a few risks to get what you want. Define what skills you have and which ones you need to practice and develop. If you’re too hard on yourself it can be detrimental to your experience. Mistakes help you learn. Just take your time and be realistic in your vision.
