How To Do Eye Exercises
May 16, 2009
Believe it or not, there are actually several exercises you can perform on a daily basis to help maintain the health of your eyes. We all know eyes can feel strained, especially after staring at a computer screen all day.
Here are a few simple techniques that can help relieve the stress and relax your eyes.
Look skyward holding that position for three seconds. Now bring your gaze back to the floor, holding it for another three seconds. Do these movements five times, then take a short break and let your eyes relax.
Now you’ll do the similar movements, this time looking right, then left. Hold each position for three seconds, performing this technique five times as well. An easy way to maintain equal speed when looking right to left is holding a pen or pencil in each hand, holding them just past shoulder width. It gives you a point to focus on.
Next, move your eyes to the corners of your vision. Look up and left, then down and right, again holding each time for three seconds. Once you’ve done this five times, take a little rest, and switch directions, this time looking up and right, down and left.
This is the basic regimen. Once you’ve done these exercises for a few days, you can now add moving your eyes in a circular motion. Start with a slow clockwise motion, and then move your eyes counter-clockwise. Always remember to stop and relax your eyes if they begin to feel strained.
Squeezing and opening your eyes can help alleviate muscle strain surrounding your eyes. This is a good practice after the eye exercises mentioned above. Close your eyes tightly, hold for three seconds, and then open them completely.
You can focus on a point, like a pencil in your hand, and slowly move it any direction, tracking the object with your eyes. Then move it towards your nose, then away. This will help strengthen your focus point.
Finally is a technique called palming. This relaxation exercise applies a small warming sensation to your eyes, increasing blood flow and general eye health. Rub your palms together for about 20 seconds, causing friction and warming the skin. Then place your warm palms gently on your closed eyes and hold for about a minute.
These few exercises can alleviate everyday stress on your eyes, maintain eyesight, and even improve vision. So take care of your eyes. They’re the only set you’ve got!
