How to Identify Your Skin Type

By on August 26, 2010

How often do you blame your skin care product for failing in the task of giving you healthy skin? More and more people tend to do so. But ask yourself this – is your skin care product really responsible or you just bought the wrong product? In most cases, it is the latter. And the reason why your skin care product failed to do the task is because it is not made for your skin type.

There are five types of skin namely: normal, combination, sensitive, oily and dry. And there are skin care products made for each type of skin. All you need to do is know what kind of skin you have and use products accordingly.

Normal skin is the one that is easy to take care of. It has regular sized pores and healthy amount of oil. But this does not mean that normal skin cannot have regular skin problems such as Blackheads. To find out if you have normal skin; press a white tissue paper on your skin 10 minutes after it is washed. If the tissue shows an even coat of very little amount of oil, you have normal skin.

Dry skin has very small pores and has no oil on the skin. The skin shows that it lacks moisturizing. This kind of skin tends to flake and sometimes even bleed. The condition gets worse during winter and dry season. In this case, use water to wash your face and a good moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. To find out if your skin is dry, use the tissue. Press the tissue on your skin 10 minutes after it has been washed. If it comes out dry and clean, your skin is dry.

Oily skin is the easiest to detect as the excess oil is visible on the face. This kind of skin has large pores and the skin tends to produce a large amount of oil, making the skin greasy and prone to Acne. In this case, the best thing to do is use a good face wash that is made for oily skin. Do not use anything that is too harsh because that will make the skin temporarily dry and increase the oil production.

Combination skin is different from the other types. This skin is not entirely dry or oily. It tends to have oily patches in some areas and dry patches in the other. Make sure you use products that are made for combination skin. To find out if you have combination skin, press a tissue on your skin. When you remove it, you will find patches of oil in some areas where as other areas are clean.

Sensitive skin is the one that is very difficult to take care. People with this kind of skin often have skin irritation and this can be caused by various factors such as chemicals, weather, cosmetics etc. It is better to ask for doctor’s advice before using anything on this kind of skin.
