How To Write A Love Letter
April 29, 2009
There’s only one kind of letter that shares the distinction of being both most often kept and most often burned and destroyed. Love letters are perhaps the hardest thing to create, even for a professional author.
The magic of a love letter is in how you write it, in conveying what you feel to the receiver, and in helping that person feel what you feel. It’s difficult, but not impossible.
A good love letter depends less on your writing style and more on the feeling you put into it. Even if you feel you’re not that talented, writing from the heart will get your emotions across to the recipient.
Always write your letters by hand; it adds a more personal touch. A love letter that has been typed will lack the emotional power you’re trying to show. Keep the language simple, but avoid misspellings. Misspellings can show carelessness, and that is something you really want to avoid in a love letter.
Be sure to keep in mind what your relationship with the person currently is like. Maybe it’s a letter to a friend you’ve developed feelings for, or a person you’ve been dating for a while. Or maybe you’re already married and just want to show your spouse how much they mean to you.
A love letter for a friend should not include too much passion. Express your feelings clearly, but try not to scare your friend. Don’t rush in, saying you want to spend your entire life with them. If you dive right in, it may not be possible to remain friends if they don’t happen to feel the same way.
If you’ve been dating for a few months, you can let your feelings really flow. Don’t go overboard on passion, because the person still may not share the intensity of your emotions. Even if you do over express yourself, you can probably continue dating.
If you’re married, there’s little danger you’ll ruin things. You know your spouse loves you, so express all those passionate feelings.
Whatever romantic stage you’re at, remember to be sincere in your love letter. You may learn that the one you love doesn’t feel the same way you do, but don’t let your fear of that dissuade you from expressing your feelings. Your beloved just might feel the same way you do, and a love letter could be the key to his or her heart.
