Singapore is located in Southeast Asia at the bottom most tip of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore is comprised of sixty-three small islands, some of which are uninhabited. The country’s diverse combination of culture, heritage and exoticism makes Singapore a popular destination point for tourists and travelers. So much so that tourism is one of the top industries of the country.
Singapore offers its visitors a wide array of entertainment and amenities such as unique shopping, a rich artistic culture, beautiful islands and beaches, and wildlife free to roam in their natural environment. Singapore’s extravagant cuisine and hot night spots make it a destination point for the young and vivacious.
Singapore is properly known as the Republic of Singapore. Its capital is Singapore City. The republic’s government is run by a parliament system. Singapore is home to many different religions including Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Taoism, and Hinduism. The people who reside in Singapore migrate from China and India. Residents speak a plethora of languages including English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil.
The country has contributed many worldwide acclaimed artists such as the violinist Vanessa Mae Nicholson and Eric Khoo whose movie “12 Storeys” was the first submission from Singapore to gain entry into the Cannes Film Festival.
Singapore may be one of the smallest countries in the world but it is packed with great beauty and astonishing topography. Bukit Timah Hill stands 164 meters tall. The Hurong Bird Park is home to the tallest man-made waterfall in the world. The largest fountain can be found in Suntec City.
Singapore has many interesting facts about the people who live there. For instance, for no known reason, October seems to be the biggest month for births. The most common surnames in Singapore are Tan, Lim and Lee. The nation is also a top user of cell phones. Approximately eighty percent of the population own cell phones and up to forty thousand new numbers are given out on a monthly basis. Of the many contributions that Singapore has offered to the world, two stand out.
They are the acclaimed Changi Airport which has been called the Best Airport Worldwide by the Business Traveler magazine. And what night club goer isn’t familiar with the Singapore Sling. This intense alcoholic beverage was first introduced at the Long Bar located in the Raffles Hotel in 1915.
