By on January 7, 2011

Your breasts go through a lot of changes in its lifetime. Sometimes there would be drastic changes like when you begin your menses, when you get pregnant and with age. On self examination of your breast you will notice a formation of lumps.

These lumps may be the result of many causes but, not all are compulsorily harmful. Some may be a mere injury, some an infection, some would be a non-cancerous/ benign growth while in some cases it could actually be cancer.

The benign kind of lumps in the breast would involve the cysts, fibroadenomas and pseudolumps. A cyst is a sac of tissue which is filled with fluid. It has the capacity of growing right within the tissue but, it is harmless. It usually affects women between the age group of 30 – 40 or those nearing menopause.

It may seem like a water balloon. Incase if the cyst is located on the surface of the skin – it is very easy to detect and define while, if it is located deeper within the breast it is quite complicated. It can be determined with the help of a fine needle aspiration. It deflates the cyst by removing the fluid.

Another type of lump is the formation of fibroadenomas which is basically a group cells made up of glandular and fibrous tissue and supports the cells other than that in the breast. It mostly occurs among teenagers and young women and also women during their pregnancy. It is usually located on the surface of the skin and hence easily detected and can be extracted via a lumpectomy, laser oblation etc.

Pseudolumps are very hard kind of lumps which do not change shape or size. They can be found anywhere on or within the breast. Those who have undergone a breast surgery or enhancement are likely to face this condition.

When the cells in your breast tend to grow in an uncontrollable manner, it is breast cancer. It is quite irregular in shape. Breast cancer is known to be the second largest cause of deaths in the US. This trend is currently changing due to the awareness spread and alertness among people added to this is the development made in the techniques and treatment available.
