Mothers Who Stay Home With Their Children
March 10, 2009
When a woman becomes pregnant, she and her spouse have a list of decisions to make. At the time of pregnancy both parents are more than likely working. Pregnancy and child birth are usually the time when a woman stops working and remains at home to raise the child. But not all women are willing to do this.
Some women are very career oriented and cannot see themselves being a stay-at-home mom. Other women look forward to staying at home with their child. Being a full time mother is a twenty-four hour job that tends to go unacknowledged. While there are many rewards to staying at home such as watching your child grow and develop, there are often very little thanks.
The decision to continue working or become a stay-at-home mom is something that the husband and wife have to discuss prior to the child’s birth.
At one point in society, it was common practice for the woman to stay at home and raise the child. But as society’s norms change it now becomes an option rather than a requirement. Staying at home with your child allows you to form a close bond with your baby. You are there to watch them form their first words and take their first steps. And the baby will always have someone there for love and support. Being a stay-at-home mom also allows you to take up some of the hobbies that you had to put off while you were employed.
When a woman is forced to leave her career and stay at home with the child, they may become resentful towards their spouse. From being a woman who was once independent and able to provide for herself, she is now left to care for a child and depend on her husband. This can lead to an identity crisis for the woman. If the woman is placed in this situation, she should discuss it with her husband and quite possibly just accept her new role. She can always go back to working once the child enters school.
The decision to be a stay-at-home mom needs to be made because it is something that the woman wants. Enjoy this time. You now have the opportunity to catch up with friends, indulge in your hobbies and watch your child grow. If you decide to put your career on hold, remind yourself that you are doing it for your personal satisfaction and do not blame it on the child.
