Night Terrors In Children
As babies become toddlers, they are weaned from sleeping in the same room as their parents and are now moved into their own room and their own special bed. The children may be excited at first about the prospect of having their own bed but may become hesitant as the time grows near to go to bed on their own. After sleeping near their parents for so long, they feel comfortable and safe at their parent’s side.
Children are often scared over something we cannot see. Yet they see it or at least sense it and this provokes sheer terror. When they sense this stimulus they may become unresponsive. The utter terror from this stimulus could causes them to get up out of their bed and leave them sitting in the middle of the floor crying. Any odd action that leads the child to wake up at night or appear to be awake is known as a night terror.
Night terrors are most common in little boys age three-to-five years old. Night terrors interrupt a child’s sleep pattern. They are not classified as nightmares. Instead they are classified as stage four terrors. Night terrors can be unconsciously stimulated by stress found at either home or at school. Most children have grown out of having night terrors by the age of seven. If the night terrors continue or get worse, consult your child’s pediatrician.
Following are some symptoms of night terrors to look for.
The child appears to be awake at night but is actually still sleeping while performing some movements or crying. Such children’s behavior at night is filled with fear. Their heart rate increases and they may sweat and appear confused. The child might be found crying for no apparent reason. And lastly, they may have a hard time falling back asleep.
