Nutrition During Lactation
Now that you are a new mom, a lot of questions may arise as to how to care for your new baby. If you are breastfeeding the new little addition to your family, it is important that you take care of yourself in order to take care of your baby.
You will need to eat more and drink more in order to ensure that your milk production is adequate enough to feed and nurture your child.
You may find the need to drink more because you always seem to feel thirsty. The reason for this is because your body is using the water available to it to produce milk. You will need to increase the amount of water that you drink on a daily basis. Try to consume between two and three quarts of water per day.
The amount of calories you eat on a daily basis is also important. You should be sure to eat at least 2500 calories a day. These foods should be healthy and full of the right nutrients. Foods that are high in protein are very important. If you were dieting before you had the baby and were eating five to six meals a day, go back to that routine. Be sure that you are eating healthy, well balanced meals each time.
Stay away from alcohol while you are breastfeeding. It will affect the health of your baby, as will the use of tobacco. Don’t pick up the smoking habit again just yet. If you can, don’t smoke at all. Second hand smoke is bad for the baby as well. You should also continue to take the prenatal vitamins that your doctor gave you. They will provide necessary vitamins for the baby.
All of these things will help your body to produce enough milk for the baby. Not only that, it will help to keep you healthy. Your body will go through many transformations while you are breastfeeding. You will feel tired and maybe even restless. The right amount of healthy calories and the right amount of sleep will make for a healthy mommy and a healthy baby.
