Nutritional Values And Benefits Of Figs

figsFicus Carica or figs, as the fruit is more commonly known, has its roots in northern Asia (Minor). Diminutive and succulent with a mouthwatering aroma and a rubbery consistency, this fruit is basically one of the most primitive fruits identified by man. This fruit is associated worldwide with popular myths and legends.

The legend of Cleopatra mentions figs as being her most desired and cherished fruit. Roman mythology mentions figs as a bequest to the roman people from Bacchus, the god of fertility. Figs are available in today’s markets in both dried and fresh forms and are available in lustrous shades of brown, green and purple.

The nutritional value of each element in 100g of fresh figs is as follows:Dietary Fiber – 3 g, Sugars – 16 g, Fat – 0.3 g, Carbohydrates – 19 g, Vitamin B6 -110 mg, Protein – 0.8 g, and Energy – 70 kcal / 310 kJ.

The nutritional value of each element in 100g of dried figs is as follows:

Dietary Fiber -10 g, Sugars – 48 g, Fat – 1 g, Protein – 3 g, Carbohydrates – 64 g and Energy – 250 kcal / 1040 kJ.

Advantages of fig consumption

•    Maintenance of blood pressure due to high concentration of potassium found in figs.

•    Figs consist of a very high percentage of fiber which makes its consumption useful in programs concerning weight management.

•    Reduction in the quantity of insulin shots can be achieved in diabetic patients by the consumption of the leaves of the fig plants.

•    Reduction in the risk of development of breast cancer.

•    Promotion of bone density and prevention of bone thinning brought about by the presence of calcium and potassium in figs.

•    Minimizes sleeping disorders like insomnia due to the presence of the element Tryptophan.

•    Increased memory capabilities and relief from exhaustion can also be achieved by the consumption of figs.

•    Pacification of aggravated thoracic passageways can be accomplished by the intake of fig juice.

•    Figs coupled with milk can be used in the treatment of ailments like anemia.

•    Figs have a laxative effect which is very useful in the treatment of severe constipation.

•    Hemorrhoids and/or piles can be cured by eating two three figs soaked in water.

•    Figs consist of pectin which is a form of fiber with a high solubility level, this allows in the reduction of levels of blood cholesterol.

•    Baked figs when applied on skin act as a natural treatment for skin disorders like itching, redness, boils, swelling and irritation.

•    Mashed fig can be used as an excellent cleanser for skin and aid in the prevention and treatment of pimples. This is mainly due to the high percentage of water in the fruit.

•    Figs can be consumed as a substitute for dairy products to obtain calcium. This is mainly advantageous for people who react adversely to dairy products.

•    Assists in proper digestion of food and cures and prevents gastric and intestinal ailments and disorders.

•    On the whole figs are fruits which consist of a whole host of benefits to the general health of the consumer.
