Packing For A Trip To The Beach
March 24, 2009
If you are planning a trip to the beach, there are some items you will want to be sure to have on hand. You can usually carry everything you need to prepare medium to large canvas tote bag. Here are some things that are essential to a happy beach experience and some other handy items to consider.
What to Pack
Clothing & Footwear
If you plan to play in the water, you will need a swimsuit. Some swimsuits are designed to stay on during swimming and other activities, while others are more decorative. Make sure you choose one of the former. You may choose to include a cover-up to wear over your swimsuit. When choosing clothing to wear to the beach, choose light colored natural fibers which can breathe. The best footwear is slippers and thong sandals.
Sunglasses
Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays by choosing a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection. This will not only help protect your vision, but help prevent wrinkles from forming in the delicate skin around your eyes from squinting. Always check for UV protection when purchasing sunglasses and remember that the more of the eye area that is covered, the better.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an absolute essential. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply it as often as the package directs. For a trip to the beach, a waterproof or sweat resistant formula is a good choice. Sunscreen comes in many forms, from lotions and creams, to gels and sprays and even in formulas for the sensitive skin of the face and for children. Remember to protect your lips as well by using a lip balm or chap-stick with SPF protection.
Towels
You will want a large beach towel or a blanket to place on the sand for comfortable seating. You will also want a separate towel to dry yourself with after being in the water. A few smaller hand towels or disposable wipes will come in handy too if you have children.
Food & Water
When you are enjoying a bright, sunny day, it is easy to get dehydrated. Be sure to pack plenty of water and drink it throughout the day. Avoid beverages with alcohol as they can speed dehydration and lead to impaired judgment which is never a good idea around water. You will also work up quite an appetite, so pack plenty of snacks that can stand the heat. Fresh fruits, especially watermelon, are an ideal choice.
Entertainment
There are plenty of activities that are perfect for the beach. You might try volleyball, flying a kite or playing Frisbee with your friends. If you prefer to relax, you might enjoy taking a book or magazine with you to read. A personal music player, such as an iPod, can also be wonderful to have. If it will not disturb others, you may even wish to listen to music on a portable radio or music player. A disposable camera is also fun to have on hand.
