Pain Relievers – Fact or Fiction
More often than not, you have the opportunity to plan your birthing experience. It starts from getting pregnant, decorating the room, finding the right pediatrician and planning the birth.
Many women decide that they would like to have some sort of pain reliever during the labor but trying to decide on the right one can be a little frightening when you don’t have the whole story on the methods that you are looking at.
One of your options is an epidural. Now, some will say that it is great for the pain but when it comes time to push, you can’t feel anything. That is pure fiction. The amount of medicine that is used in today’s world of medicine, you will have plenty of time for the medication to start to wear off. Years ago they used too much and that is where a lot of the fairy tales come from. But, it is a fact that this procedure can make your labor last longer.
Another option is a medication called pehthidine. Yes, it is a fact that the medicine will get into your baby’s bloodstream and can possibly make the baby drowsy just as it will you. This medicine will not kill the pain but make it bearable.
A strong fear that a lot of new mom’s have is the idea of being cut. An episiotomy is the act of the doctor making an incision to help the baby come out into the new world. It is fiction that the doctor does not numb you. Don’t worry ladies, he won’t let you feel a thing.
Some ladies also fear that using nitrous oxide will make them sick. If you have ever had this at the dentist then you know that it is odorless and pure fiction. The nausea usually comes from your breathing pattern and not the actual breathing of the gas.
Other methods such as hypnotherapy, it is fiction that you lose control and as for the birthing pool, it is fiction about staying in the pool when the baby is ready to pop out. You have the option of getting out of the water if you so choose.
