Pregnancy After A Termination
After having a termination, most women who want get pregnant again may fall into two groups. There are those who think that they will get pregnant quickly again because there were no problems previously. Then there are others who worry because they think that the operation might affect their chances of getting pregnant in the future.
Regret and distress
On average, most women take about nine months to get pregnant after they start trying. For some, who are very few, it takes six months. The relatively long period can cause distress among women who find themselves in this situation.
There are some regrets in women who have had a termination and this can lead to feelings of guilt for some weeks and months after. In this case, counseling may help. The chance that a past termination will affect your chances of getting pregnant is very small.
Complications and Infections
This could happen if there were complications leading to perforation of the uterus during the operation or there is a post-operative infection. These are rare occurrences.
One problem that is common after termination is the possibility of carrying a vaginal infection like Chlamydia into the womb and the tubes during the operation. This happens through the instruments used in the termination operation.
Nowadays, vaginal swabs are taken before the operation so that possible infections are treated before the termination. Many patients are put on antibiotic treatment after the termination to reduce the risk of infections.
Cervical incompetence
In some rare cases also, the cervix may be lax due to the instruments used in the operation. This might lead to late miscarriage. If cervical competence is recognized as the problem, a purse string suture can be inserted into the cervix in the early days of the pregnancy to tighten it. This is removed before delivery.
Consultation before conception
All women who want to get pregnant must have a preconception consultation with their GP or midwife. This could be very useful for women who ever had a termination. This could be the time to voice out any concerns so you can have realistic expectations as to when you will get pregnant.
