Properly Caring For Your Eyes
April 21, 2009
Our eyes are very important because they give us the ability to see. Without vision, life would not be as meaningful or colorful to us. We use our eyes constantly and often overwork them, causing many eye problems.
Some of the most common eye problems are conjunctivitis, mascular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. In order to preserve our eyes and keep them disease-free, we need to learn the proper way to care for them.
Helpful diets for eye care
• Eat foods rich in vitamin A (such as carrots, oranges, pumpkins, green vegetables, fish, liver, and eggs).
• Eat foods rich in vitamin C (such as Indian Gooseberries, oranges, lemons, and cabbage).
Herbal remedies
• Carrots – carrots contain beta carotene (vitamin A) and help to support eye health and prevent night blindness.
• Indian Gooseberry – Indian gooseberry is good for relieving conjunctivitis and glaucoma. Mix it with honey before ingesting.
• Marigold – marigold can be used as a cooling, effective eye wash.
• Parsley juice – parsley juice improves corneal ulcers, weak eyes, and conjunctivitis.
• Aniseed powder – aniseed powder is useful for treating cataracts; take 1 tablespoon of the powder twice a day.
Home remedies
Mix raw parsley juice and carrots. Drink one glass of the juice each day. Soak almonds in milk overnight. Mix with sandalwood the next morning and apply carefully to the eyelids. This should reduce redness in the eyes. Mix sesame with honey and inhale the resulting scent to stop watering of the eyes.
Helpful tips
Get plenty of rest to combat eye strain. Wash hands frequently to prevent the transfer of germs or foreign substances to your eyes. We often touch our eyes with our hands and fingers without even realizing it. Get your eyes checked annually by a physician. He will check for common eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
If you are prescribed medication for an eye condition or disorder, take it faithfully because it could save your vision. If you forget one dose, don’t double up the next time; instead, wait and take your regularly scheduled dosage.
