Rejuvenating Your Face
July 25, 2009
The term used to refer to all forms of restoration of the youthful appearance of the face is facial rejuvenation. There are four methods of doing facial rejuvenation: they are injections (of Botox); resurfacing methods like microdermabrasion, laser treatments, and the use of chemical peels; surgery.
Including facelifts, eyelid surgery, nose jobs and face augmentation; and topical tretinoin and tazarotene – an enhancement of collagen production to reverse the damage caused by exposure to UVA.
Facial aging may be caused by two factors. There are intrinsic factors, which come about as a result of aging and extrinsic factors like exposure to chemicals, exposure to sunlight and UV rays, and smoking. These are the factors that contribute to the predictable patterns we see on our face. The change in our face, changes our total look.
There is basically two ways physicians treat facial aging. The first is by reduction, which involves making the skin fit the face. The second way is augmentation, which means giving the skin its normal look by stretching it. In some cases both methods may be combined.
The degree of severity of facial aging should determine the choice of procedure for facial rejuvenation.
Normal wrinkles are catered for by using Botox which is injectable. Botox® is the best kind of injectable treatment for wrinkles available today. There are other types, but they cannot match Botox®.
Wrinkles that cover large areas and those related to sun-damage have their causes in the biological changes that might have occurred in the skin itself. The best methods here are microdermabrasion, laser surfacing, and chemical peels. These methods help the skin to restore some of its internal biological properties.
If the skin aging is advanced, a combination of injection and resurfacing methods may be used in addition to some surgical methods.
Severe facial aging
Severe facial aging can be managed by surgical procedures; there could be implants or excisions, or a combination of both. An example of this is modern rhinoplasties.
Because these procedures are three dimensional, they give the greatest level of rejuvenation and so they are able to solve the highest degrees of facial aging. They come with some limited amount of scarring, but the scars are mostly acceptable.
Even though these methods are available for treating facial aging, the best thing to do is to avoid exposure to extrinsic factors so that the process of aging is reduced.
