Skin Care, Beauty And Cosmetic Ingredients To Avoid

June 26, 2009

skin-carePeople usually don’t read the labels on cosmetics as the names of ingredients look too complicated.  They don’t realize that the chemical ingredients can affect their beauty and health.

Several chemicals that are used in cosmetics have a side effect and it is very important to be aware of these harmful ingredients and avoid them. People try to make changes to their appearance but they don’t realize they are also making changes to their health in a negative way. The following are some of the harmful chemicals which are used in manufacture of cosmetic products.

Propylene Glycol

It is a petroleum derived product which locks in humidity.  This chemical penetrates deep into the skin and alters the skins structure.  Propylene Glycol is mainly found as an industrial anti-freeze substance which is toxic and may cause damage to the kidney and liver.

Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea

These chemicals are very popular preserving material and therefore give products a longer shelf life. At the same time they can cause skin inflammation.

Petrolatum

Petrolatum coats the skin and its effect on the skin is very unhealthy.  It is mostly used as a moisturizer but it stops and inhibits the process of natural moisturizing. It is used in cosmetics as it is very cheaply available.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Every shampoo label has the name of this chemical ingredient on it due to its lathering characteristics.  The negative effects of this ingredient can cause allergic reactions, bladder and kidney infections, skin rashes, dandruff problems, hair loss and genital disorders.  It is very important to avoid this toxic ingredient.

Ethyl, Methyl, Propyl and Butyl Parabens

Normal combinations of these chemicals are found in almost every beauty cosmetic product.  They give products longer shelf life by inhibiting microbial growth.  Parabens are cheap ingredients and that is the reason they are very popular. They are toxic and may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Behentrimonium Chloride

This chemical ingredient is derived from ammonia which is a very toxic compound.  Strong concentrations in cosmetic products can cause damage to eyes.

Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA)

DEA and TEA are used to regulate pH balance but they are associated with promoting health disorders, kidney degeneration, anemia and liver damage. These are toxic chemicals and damage the pH balance and causes dry skin and hair.

All brands of cosmetics do not use toxic and harmful chemicals.  Therefore it is very important to read the labels before purchasing cosmetic products.
