Some Facts You Need to Know about Pagets Disease of the Bone

November 25, 2008

This is a bone disease characterised by enlarged and deformed bones. The enlargement and the deformity can lead to consequences that can only be described as serious. Paget’s disease of the bone is one of the common diseases of the bone. In this article we want to look at certain pertinent facts related to the disease.

Overview

Sir James Paget was the first person to describe the disease. That is why it is named after him. The disease is common among men of 40 years and above. Although it can affect women, they have less risk. Between 1.5 to 8% of the population in all the regions of the world suffer from the disease.

Symptoms

Patients of Paget’s disease of the bone have their bones undergoing excessive deterioration and deformation. This process eventually leads to the development of several symptoms which include bone pain, weakness, arthritis, deformities and high risks of fracture.

Causes

Paget’s disease of the bone can be caused by several factors. One of these is slow viral infection. An example is the paramyxo viruses like measles and respiratory syncytial virus. This can happen when the infection has been there for years. Genetic mutations can also cause Paget’s disease. This makes it hereditary.

Diagnosis

X-rays and clinical tests can be used to diagnose the disease. X-rays are very helpful because the bones can easily be distinguished by it. Clinical test involves determining the alkaline phosphate levels in the blood. If the levels of phosphate are abnormal while calcium levels are normal, it shows Paget’s disease of the bone. Abnormal aminotransferase levels also suggest the presence of Paget’s disease.

Prognosis and Treatment

Paget’s disease of the bone has a generally effective prognosis if the disease is diagnosed and treatment done before any complications and major damages occur in the body. The treatment of the disease involves so many things such as rheumatology, endocrinology, orthopedics, otolaryngology and neurology. But there is no complete cure for Paget’s disease of the bone. Treatments available aim only at relieving the pain. These include surgery, medication and physiotherapy. Good diet and exercise are advisable for the patient.
