Stretch Marks During pregnancy And Prevention
As you reach the last few weeks of your pregnancy, you will probably begin to notice small streaks that appear on the skin on the belly, abdomen and the surrounding regions, including the thighs, buttocks, breasts and hips etc. Called stretch marks, these visible marks appear when the tissues beneath the skin in these regions lose their elasticity. And this usually occurs when the skin stretches considerably to give room for the growing belly.
How To Recognize Stretch Marks?
Although stretch marks are common in pregnant women, they are more prevalent in women who have genetic traits (for the issue) handed down via the family tree, have more sensitive and tight skin, who gain weight rapidly, who have excess amniotic fluid or who seem to carry multiple babies or a just a single heavy baby in their womb.
It’s not hard to recognize stretch marks as and when they occur. Usually starting as thin pinkish lines, they change to a deep red color with time and become a deep shade of brown just a few days before the delivery. And although they fade away with time after delivery, they would not completely disappear and would remain as fair streaks (as compared to your skin tone).
Ways To Prevent Stretch Marks
Rather than getting the stretch marks and then breaking your head trying to get them off your body, you can try out some simple tips to keep these ugly streaks at bay. And here are some useful tips on that front.
Gaining Weight Slowly
A woman is expected to gain anywhere between 25-30 pounds during pregnancy. Instead of gaining all that weight in as little time as possible (which would cause stretch marks), try putting on weight slowly. You’ve got 10 months. Divide the pounds you need to gain by 10 and gain only that amount of weight you need to for that month.
A Well Hydrated Body
Keeping your body hydrated during pregnancy can in turn keep your skin soft and supple. This would enable your skin to return to its original size and texture very easily after delivery in addition to expanding appropriately (without pressure) during pregnancy. Thus, a hydrated body could keep your body free of stretch marks.
Belly Moisturizers
Apply moisturizers, creams and lotions above the belly, abdomen and all the other areas of the body that are more prone to develop stretch marks. Regular application of moisture would make sure that the skin in these areas remains supple and strong enough to handle the pressure caused by stretching.

Creams, Lotions And Oils
There are plenty of standard anti stretch mark creams, lotions and oils that can be applied over the skin both during the pregnancy and afterwards to handle stretch marks. Regular application of these products on the skin would enable the latter to naturally expand and contract, thereby reducing the stretch marks in these regions quickly and easily.
Medications That Help
Standard medications like glycolic acid or tretinoin may help reduce stretch marks. And although these medications are considered harmful during pregnancy, they can be taken afterwards to combat stretch marks.
Nevertheless, it is highly recommended that you check these creams, oils and medications with a qualified medical practitioner beforehand. Some products may contain chemicals that can harm the skin and worsen the issue instead of curing it.
