Symptoms of Post-Natal Depression

March 20, 2010

Every mother undergoes changes in her body during pregnancy and delivery of the child, since hormonal changes take place in the body bringing some unexpected effects.

Most important effect is known as the baby-blues, which includes anxiety and emotional disturbance during the first couple of weeks after the delivery. It is quite normal after such a big incidence as child birth. It is also known as maternal blues and will remain only for a couple of weeks.

It is caused by hormonal changes, as the body increases the levels of Progesterone, Estrogen and Endorphins during pregnancy and after child birth, there is withdrawal of these hormones, apart from the stress and strain of the birth of baby. These causes baby blues.

You may be irritable towards people and may lose temper especially if someone comes in physical contact with you.

Apart for feeling lonely, you will also be lethargic in your attitude and you may suffer from sleeplessness in spite of efforts to get some sleep.  When you don’t have proper sleep and your mind keeps thinking about so many things, your mind will be full of negative thoughts and the depression will become more intense.

You may lose Appetite. Apart from not feeling hungry, you will not want to eat and when you sit down to eat, you eat very limited quantity of food.  Again, when you don’t have proper food, you will be lacking energy.

You will be without any kind of pleasure or joy from anything around. You will lose interest in sex, which used to give you pleasure, and a sense of comfort and safety. You will find the act boring and would not like to have sex.  There will be a feeling of guilt, surrounded by a feeling of uselessness.

You may feel panicked about something or the other and feel palpitations in your heart. You may be unnecessarily worried whether the baby is properly breathing or not, whether it is healthy etc. You don’t like to leave the baby to someone else’s care.

The post natal depression is normal in women and will vanish in a couple of week’s time after child birth.
