Teach Your Child To Read

The tips and activities provided in this article will help or encourage parents teaching their child to read and write. Pick a time of day in which you read to your child.  Perhaps a good time is to read to them is before they go to bed.  Set aside at least fifteen-to-twenty minutes a day when the family stops what they are doing and sits together to read.  Show excitement to your children when reading.

If they see that you are excited about reading they too will get excited and look forward to your daily reading sessions.  Research shows that by reading to your children, you can help them comprehend language better.  Reading also increases their vocabulary.  Keep reading material around your children.  Fill their room with interesting looking books.  Keep some handy in the car and in other rooms of your house.  Pick books with exciting cover designs to intrigue them enough to pick them up.

You can teach your children to read at any given time of the day.  If you are out driving, have them read to you the street signs.  If you go to the grocery store or mall, read the product descriptions and signs with them.

Spend time at the libraries.  Most libraries have children’s sections and even host special reading events for children.  Get your children a library card and they will be excited about going to the library.

Pay attention to your child’s reading.  This way you can pick up on any learning disabilities they may have.  If you feel that your child is exhibiting difficulties reading, get them help early on.  A reading problem will not go away; it will only get worse.  There are plenty of tutoring resources available to help young children read.

There are also computer programs that will help a child read and teach them to comprehend what they have just read.  When they are reading, listen to how they pronounce the words and correct them if they make a mistake.  After they read a sentence, ask them if they understand what they just read.
